The Joyners – From risk to reward

Every Sunday the Access volunteers and staff share and celebrate “win” stories – the ways we’ve seen God at work in people’s lives. Christina and James Joyners’ story is one such “win.” Both James and Christina grew up going to church. But after a painful experience with church as adults, they stopped attending altogether. For 10 years church was not a part of their lives. They were done with church.

JoynerphotoThe Joyners’ neighbors, Troy and Stacey Youse, started inviting them to Access Church – repeatedly – throughout several of their kids’ soccer and football seasons. “Troy just kept asking and asking,” Christina said.

Finally the Joyners said “yes” and visited Access. Their kids, James (now 10) and Devon (now 6), loved it. “Access was different from any church we had been to before,” said James. “And everyone was so welcoming.”

Once they walked through the doors, the environments and the practical teaching at Access kept the Joyners coming back week after week.… Read the rest

The Smiths – A Christmas Miracle

“This church is like a Christmas miracle!” is a quote that’s pretty well known around Access Church. It all started during a Community Group meeting, when Justin Smith was asked why he and his wife, Jasmine, are committed to Access. Here’s the story that led Justin to compare Access to “a Christmas miracle.”

jsmithJustin and Jasmine met and married in the Atlanta area. Soon after their wedding, they moved to Tampa and prepared to welcome their first child. Justin and Jasmine’s marriage had a rough start. “We got married after knowing each other less than a year,” Justin said. “There was a lot to learn, and we had conflicts over silly things.”

Then the couple was devastated by the loss of their baby, Queenie. Grieving, with their faith reeling, they questioned everything. “It took a toll on our marriage,” Jasmine said. “My dream for my life had turned into a nightmare.”

Looking for a fresh start, Justin took a job in Jacksonville.… Read the rest

The Hootselles – Finding a place for the whole family

View More: http://mariskirsphotography.pass.us/hootselle-holiday-picturesWhether it’s the dinner menu, a family activity, or the music in the car, it’s a challenge for families to find something every member of the family enjoys. Could it be possible to find this in a church? Jeff and Lisa Hootselle knew that it was possible, having experienced the environments of Woodstock City Church in Georgia, a campus of North Point Community Church. When Jeff accepted a job in Jacksonville, finding a church like Woodstock City Church was a high priority for the family. When they learned about Access, they were excited. “We immediately knew we had a new church home and checked that very important box off of our list of essentials even before we moved to Florida,” Lisa said.

When the Hootselles attended Access, it immediately felt familiar. With all the changes involved in a move, particularly for Hayden, 11, and Maddie, 8, they felt a sense of relief to be in the familiar surroundings of a church they loved.… Read the rest

Being the Church – Hurricane Help

img_2381You never know exactly what you’ll get when a hurricane comes to town – how much wind or water. You never know what you will lose either, the very least of which are power and plans.

Access Church’s plan was to launch services at the new Baymeadows location that weekend, but when predictions of Matthew came into play, the plan changed. The doors to the Baymeadows building were closed that Sunday, but Access Church was open for business.

Mandy and Ryan Howard decided to wait out the storm at a friend’s house. When Matthew came through Friday, the Howards’ neighbor called to tell them a tree had fallen on their house. Waiting for the storm to clear before returning home made for an anxious night. “Once we got to the house on Saturday morning, it was shocking to see a tree that big laying on top of our home,” Mandy said. “The tree had gone through the roof of garage, knocked down the overhang, broken holes in our deck, and knocked over our fence.”

That afternoon, Mandy received a text from Maggie Goodhart checking in on the Howard family.… Read the rest

Losco Baptisms

September 25 was our last Sunday at our Losco Campus, and it was also the Sunday we had the privilege of baptizing four people. Each journey is unique, and we’re so grateful that God allowed Access Church to be part of each story. Watch the videos below, and join us in celebrating these baptisms.

We’re Up & Running in Baymeadows!

We’ve officially relocated to our new Baymeadows location! Access Church is now meeting at 8133 Point Meadows Dr. (at The Church of Eleven22). Our services there are happening every Sunday at 4:00 & 6:15pm. All volunteers and their families are invited to enjoy dinner each week between services.

But that’s not all! We’re actively working on acquiring land in St. Johns so we can custom build a facility to which we’re proud to invite our neighbors. Make sure you’re at church October 30, as we’ll be sharing a lot more about this project.

Why Relocate?

About a year and a half ago, the elders and I gathered a group of real-estate professionals and began a conversation about purchasing the building we had been leasing on Losco Road. However, we encountered two obstacles: First, we couldn’t afford what the sellers wanted for the building. We were about one million dollars apart. Second, about 70% of our attenders were coming from St. Johns, and it was clear that St.… Read the rest

Belong before you believe – The Carltons’ Story

When Mike and Lisa Carlton moved to Jacksonville from Atlanta a little over a year ago, they were excited to have found a great place to live and raise their kids – and all near the beach! While living in Atlanta, they had attended North Point Community Church, and when they learned there was a North Point partnership church in Jacksonville, they felt it was another piece falling into place for their move.

14550803_10210355851069475_111159099_oAs exciting as it can be, change also means challenges. After the boxes were unpacked in Jacksonville and the initial excitement died down, the Carlton family felt the relational ripple effect of the move. The everyday reality of being far from long-time friends and being “new” to every community they encountered was difficult. Mike was adjusting to a new job, and the kids, then 8-year-old Katie and 3-year-old Charlie, were adjusting to a new neighborhood and school. Lisa had recently transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom, and though she was enjoying it, she missed not being a part of a work community.… Read the rest

New Baymeadows Location

What’s Happening?

About a year and a half ago, the elders and I gathered a group of real-estate professionals and began a conversation about purchasing the Losco building we have been leasing. However, we encountered two obstacles: First, we couldn’t afford what the sellers wanted for the building. We were about one million dollars apart. Second, at the time, about 70% of our attenders were coming from St. Johns, and it was clear that St. Johns was about to once again experience explosive growth.

So that team, which by the way, was made up entirely of Duval residents, decided to pursue the possibility of a new location for Access Church in St. Johns. It just seemed like the best way for us to connect the most people to Jesus.

The trick is finding something that is more convenient for our St. Johns attenders without discouraging our Duval attenders from also inviting their neighbors. And, of course, there is also the cost factor.… Read the rest

Headfirst – The Guffeys’ Story

“Everybody’s Invited,” we say at Access, to come, to connect, and to get involved. Not long after their first visit, Raymond and Jill Guffey jumped in to do just that, headfirst.

Raymond and Jill had heard great things about Access from friends, so they brought their 2-year-old son, Dru, to the “Easter Eggstravaganza” event. “We wanted Dru to have a church to call home, and we wanted a place to grow our own faith so we could nourish his,” Jill said.

guffey1Access was completely different from previous churches they had experienced, especially for Raymond, who has Catholic roots. But after a few visits, they knew Access was something they wanted to be a part of. “Right away I loved the music, the practical teaching, and the comfortable atmosphere,” Jill said.

Knowing that community was the key to growing their faith, Raymond and Jill joined a Community Group. “We wanted some time as a couple with other adults, and we wanted to learn more about God,” Jill said.… Read the rest

Don’t go through it alone — the Gribbens

A friend invited Robert Gribben to Access Church, and by the time his future wife, Melissa, moved to Jacksonville, she knew it would be her church home, too. Robert and Melissa instantly loved the relevant and challenging messages from Andy Stanley. They connected right away with the music 13901539_10103180653157429_2511410496074364000_nand the vibe of the church. “It wasn’t so big that it would keep us from getting to know people, but it wasn’t so small that we wouldn’t find a place to fit in,” Melissa said.

The couple joined their first community group, filled with young married couples, after becoming engaged. “It was a good experience for us to be around other couples who had been married for a few years,” Melissa said. “They were able to share their wisdom with us.”

Schedule conflicts caused them to join another group when they were newly married. “In this group, we walked through lost jobs, new babies, and heartbreaking sadness together,” Melissa said. Their third and current community group began just before Melissa was hospitalized.… Read the rest

Fill up your tank at Fuel!

Regardless of the weather, the morning commute to work is compromised when the vehicle is out of fuel. The plans for the day could be ordinary or extraordinary, but they will never be realized if the catalyst for movement is empty.

fuel-webThis is a simple concept, but we rarely apply it to our spiritual endeavors. At Access Church, we understand that in order to be truly available for God to do great things in us, we have to be refueled.

Fuel ’16 is the perfect opportunity for individuals on Strategic Service teams, as well as those interested in joining a team, to rest and reignite the passion for service. The afternoon will include worship with our band, communion, a closer look at the vision behind our environments, and an opportunity to meet with your team for dinner, conversation, and bonding.

As summer winds to a close, this is a vital time to re-energize before the new school year kicks off. Make plans to join us Sunday, July 31, 4:00 – 6:30pm.… Read the rest

Location Change for Access Church – a note from Rich Barrett

What’s Happening?
